Bicknell Center Presents: Concerts
Regionally and nationally known performers often make a stop in Pittsburg to perform on our stage, from groups like the U.S. Air Force Academy Falconaires to former PSU student Jennifer Knapp, now a hit recording artist.
PSU Music Department Special Events and Small Ensembles
Beyond the academic music groups that perform on our stage, the PSU Music Department often arranges for special events to be recorded and/or livestreamed, from the weeks-long Pittsburg Summer Music Fest to senior recitals to district and state festivals.
Music Festivals
The Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, Pittsburg State University Department of Music, Bells of the Balkans, and community groups present music festivals throughout the year.
PSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo
The PSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo are groups comprised of students in a variety of majors who bring to life standards of the past as well as contemporary works in many styles, from Big Band to fusion, under the direction of Robert Kehle.
Pride of the Plains Marching Band
The "Pride of the Plains" Marching Band at Pittsburg State University is a highly spirited 180+ piece contemporary style marching band that consists of traditional marching band instrumentation, color guard, feature twirlers and the Crimson and Gold Dancers. The marching band at Pitt State is a tremendous source of pride to the university and throughout the region.
PSU Wind Ensemble
The PSU Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band at Pittsburg State Universityy, open by audition to the finest wind and percussion players in the Music Department. The group performs a variety of works, from classical to contemporary, under the direction of Andrew Chybowski.
PSU Opera Theatre
PSU Opera Theatre produces two productions annually, with at least one that is fully staged with orchestral accompaniment. Repertoire is diverse, from traditional operas by Mozart to cabaret style evenings devoted to the works of American musical theatre composers. Productions are directed by Patrick Howle.
PSU Symphonic Band
The PSU Symphonic Band is offered in the sspring ssemester, open to all students who wish to participate in a musical ensemble regardless of their major. Concerts feature a variety of music, from marches and Broadway medleys to some of the finest serious music composed for this medium, under the direction of Doug Whitten.
Southeast Kansas Symphony at PSU
Founded at PSU in 1915 by Walter McCray, the professor for whom the music building would be named, the Southeast Kansas Symphony at Pittsburg State University still is going strong. With four major performances each year by students, faculty, and community members under the direction of Raul Munguia, its goal is to be an integral part of the culture of Southeast Kansas.
PSU Choirs
Pittsburg State has a long and proud tradition of excellence in the area of vocal music.
The central ensemble in the program is the 100-member University Choir, which is open to all PSU students. Experiences in smaller ensembles are also available through the PSU Chorale as well as various ad hoc groups, under the direction of Susan Marchant.
